Using the Word Wheel

Having trouble spelling? Or uncertain if the word you're looking for is spelled correctly in a document? Let ISYS help you!

Tips using the Word Wheel

ISYS has an inbuilt function called the 'Word Wheel' that can help you look up a word in the ISYS knowledge base or look for a word that sounds like the word you type.

All you need to do is start ISYS Query and click on the Query button on the toolbar.

  Query Button Word Wheel

Note: The word wheel is available for all ISYS Query options; Menu Assisted Query, Plain English Query, Command Based Query, as well as Query-by-Concept.

To look up a word, select the Word Wheel from any Query window. ISYS will then show you the Word Wheel window:

Select the radio button for the option you want and type in the word, or part of the word, in the text box.

If you choose the 'Starts With' option, the Word Wheel displays all indexed words beginning with the characters you type. The number of words listed decreases as you enter more characters.

For example, if you type in a word like manag, it will likely result in a lost of words such as;

Manage Manageable
Managed Management
Manager Managers
Manages Managing

The 'Sounds Like' option allows you to search for words that sound similar. For instance, you could type in educasion and ISYS would show you a range or words which have a similar sound to it.

Trying to spell litigation, but you're not sure of the spelling? It sounds like lytagayshun but you know it isn't spelt that way. Simply select the 'Sounds Like' radio button and type the word lytagayshun, ISYS will then list all the possible results. This feature is very useful for unusual place names or peoples' names, or when you aren't sure the original author had the correct spelling to start with.

To include a word in your query, single-click on the word in the list and then click on the OK button. The word is then added to your query and the Word Wheel window closes. Or you can double-click on a word and ISYS will append your query with the OR operator and then the word. This allows you to search for several different spelling versions at once. The Word Wheel window will remain open.

Next time you are having trouble spelling a word, don't take out the dictionary to look up a word, simply use the Word Wheel feature of ISYS.

Happy Word Wheeling!
